September Message from the President

Albany/Capital District APICS Members & Supporters,

For the 9th consecutive year, the Albany/Capital District Chapter has achieved a Platinum rating through the Associations’ chapter benchmarking process (C-BAR). Platinum is the highest possible rating and the mark of a strong, healthy chapter with great continuity. I would like to thank everyone responsible for this sustained record of success – our members and supporters, instructors, and the Board of Directors. It is not an easy rating to achieve, let alone maintain for so many years – congratulations to everyone!

With the Chapter year starting up next week, I want to discuss the concept of APICS as a long-term investment. By investment, I mean time and/or money spent by individuals or businesses towards membership, education, certification, and dinner meetings. Because of my involvement on the Board and as an instructor, I’m privy to the short-term thinking that some have when assessing the value of APICS. I know many of you have seen or experienced this as well – companies not supporting APICS activity, professionals not willing to invest time or money in APICS if their companies don’t value it, individuals showing up and expecting instant gratification of their needs (usually a job or a sale or possibly a raise), and many other examples. APICS, like most other things truly worthwhile, doesn’t usually produce instant results. The potential benefits of APICS - a job, a sale, a raise, a promotion, professional development, a more valuable workforce, or higher profitability generally come from a long-term commitment. I equate the decision to invest in APICS to a phrase I once heard in reference to Toyota’s culture of long-term thinking – “Doing the right things long-term will produce the right results”.

Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you on Thursday, September 20th for our first dinner meeting of the 2012-2013 Chapter year - a joint meeting hosted by ASQ. I would also like to thank you in advance for spreading the word about Albany/Capital District APICS. If you have any questions, comments, or ideas, feel free to email me at tnadler@apicsalbany.org.
